Every week images on global seismicity give us an excellent opportunity to the information of seismotectonics of the deadly impacts of a natural disaster around the world. Introducing the weekly earthquake activities in the world will guide us to better understand the causes of large earthquakes and where the potentially destructive earthquakes are located, thus this course highlight the seismotectonics of global earthquakes occurred in one week

These weekly courses by the graduate students present current large events in the world from USGS Earthquake Hazards and Harvard CMT Catalog to discuss the possible causes for the reported events. The subject-oriented topic will focus on the following questions:
1. Where large earthquakes locate in the world every week?
2. What tectonic and mechanical causes these earthquakes?
3. Which tectonic regimes we have had frequent large events and why?

1. Stein, S. and Wysession, M., 2003. An introduction to seismology, Earthquake, and their structure, Blackwell Publishing, pp. 498.
2. Bolt, B., 2003. Earthquakes, 5th edition, W.H. Freeman, New York.
3. USGS Earthquake Hazards Program: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/
4. Harvard Global CMT Catalog: http://www.globalcmt.org/CMTsearch.html

(Assignments)
(Projects)
